Charlie Nicholas Celtic Debut

Nicholas’ career started with a bang as he scored on his Celtic debut in a convincing 3-1 win against Queens Park in 1979. He soon earnt his place as a regular in the first team and in 1981 Nicholas was awarded the Scottish PFA Young Player of the Year. During his time at Celtic, Nicholas was a part of a number of title winning squads including the Scottish Premier League. His last season at Celtic came to an end in 1983. Nicholas scored 48 goals throughout the season; which won him both the Scottish PFA Player of the Year and the Scottish Football Writers’ Player of the Year.

Scotland to Arsenal Transfer

His £750,000 move to Arsenal made Charlie Nicholas the second most expensive transfer from the Scottish League at the time. Nicholas spent the majority of his prime with the English giants and scored 54 goals in 184 matches; this lead to him being ranked number 28 in Arsenal’s all time greatest Gunners. He later joined Aberdeen before moving back to boyhood club Celtic. Nicholas’ career ended at Clyde before he retired to become a pundit on Sky Sports. Nicholas enjoyed a successful international career and scored 5 goals in his 20 appearances; he was a part of Scotland’s 1986 FIFA World Cup squad.
