Monty Don is the UK’s leading horticulturalist, after taking over the mantle from Alan Titchmarsh as presenter of Gardener’s World. He’s a garden writer, broadcaster and household name. Monty’s horticultural knowledge is revered and called upon for live events and TV commentary. A charismatic keynote speaker and awards host, Monty made his name from presenting various Channel 4 gardening programmes, BBC’s Gardeners World, and host of travel programmes.
Beginnings & set backs
Monty Don was twice expelled from school, and saw his first business (in jewellery) end in ruin. He’s suffered serious illness as well as financial disasters, but each time he’s emerged stronger and more determined. The Gardeners’ World frontman has never had a set career plan but he does have a remarkable story.
Monty first appeared on television in 1989 on This Morning and has worked on television since. He took the lead presenting role on Channel 4’s Real Gardens and Lost Gardens. He presented the BBC’s Gardeners World for five years. As well as live coverage from the Chelsea, Tatton Park and Hampton Court flower shows. He has also reported on environmental developments for Tomorrow’s World and, with his wife Sarah, produced a book and series about organic gardening and cooking, Fork to Fork.
Monty has also presented many travel programmes, including Around the World in 80 Gardens, My Dream Farm and Mastercraft.
Interests & support
As well as ‘pure’ garden programmes, Monty has thrown his energy into a farm-based series to help rehabilitate repeat offenders and drug addicts, Growing Out of Trouble.
