Ken Bruce, who presented the hugely popular mid-morning show on BBC Radio 2 was born in Glasgow. He began his broadcasting career with the Hospital Broadcasting Service in Glasgow and went on to become a staff announcer for BBC Scotland. This led to his own daily afternoon show and involvement in a wide range of current affairs programmes, concerts and commercial voice-overs.
Ken Bruce: Beginnings
Ken Bruce began working for Radio 2 in the early 1980s as a deputy presenter. In 1984, he took over the Saturday Late Show and began presenting his own daily show the following year from which he stood down in early 2023. In April 2023 Ken is due to join Greatest Hits Radio with a brand-new mid-morning show weekdays from 10am – 1pm. Ken will bring with him his the legendary Popmaster Quiz, presented with what the Observer described as his ‘droll, whimsical, tongue-in-cheek presentation.’
Events
In addition, Ken Bruce has been associated with broadcasts from a number of major events – the 1986 Commonwealth Games, the Seoul Olympics, National Music Day, The Voice of Musical Theatre 2000, and subsequent Eurovision Song Contests.
Broadcasting
On BBC Radio 4, he has presented Pick of the Week and was host of the travel programme Breakaway for two years, and on the BBC World Service he had his own weekly programme of music for an unbroken seven year period. On Radio 2 in the 1990s Ken hosted the comedy series The What If Show and in that period he also became one of the regular presenters of Friday Night is Music Night. Ken’s other activities include airline inflight programmes, voice-overs, speaking engagements and hosting orchestral concerts.
Television
He is the patron of Stoke Mandeville Hospital Radio. Ken occasionally makes appearances in the Dictionary Corner on Channel 4’s Countdown and appeared on a Never Mind the Buzzcocks special for Children in Need. Along with Lynn Bowles, he has also taken part in Ready, Steady, Cook, broadcast on BBC Two. He has also written his autobiography, The Tracks of My Years. In February 2023, Bruce appeared with his son Murray in the first part of a BBC Two documentary series, presented by Chris Packham, titled Inside Our Autistic Minds.
