This Amelia Earhart quote from the business card of Petra Wetzel, founder and managing director of WEST Brewery in Glasgow; stands as testament to the optimism and sheer force of character. That has enabled her to grow her business, from a self contained German style beer hall and brewery on Glasgow Green; into a successful distribution operation for her WEST brand.
Petra Wetzel: Brewing Business
Originally from Bavaria, Wetzel moved to Glasgow in 1994; to study Business, Politics and Art History at the University of Glasgow. The idea for WEST, a German style brewery producing beers in strict accordance with traditional German Purity Law; was born when Wetzel’s father visited her as a student in Glasgow and was unimpressed by what was being brewed locally at the time.
WEST Brewery
After her first job with the Glasgow Tourist Board; Wetzel trained as a lawyer with one of Scotland’s largest law firms. In 2006 her vision of a brewery producing quality German style lagers in the UK became a reality when Wetzel opened the WEST Brewery, Bar & Restaurant on Glasgow Green.
Since its inception, WEST has received accolades from the brewing and hospitality industries. These have included 3 DLG German Gold Medals, a SIBA Supreme Champion award; and the 2012 AA Scotland Pub of the Year award.

Her sights are now set firmly on the future. With a new brewery in the North of the city in planning; which will increase the brewing capacity of WEST twenty-fold, and plans to bottle more of the WEST range.
