Marc Hogan: Funny Business
An inspiring talk packed with humour and a serious business message. Can a sales & communications trainer become an Edinburgh Festival comic in less than 12 months – all to win a £1 bet? In August 2008, while giving a talk to a business audience, a fellow speaker told Marc Hogan that he was “quite funny”. But would a paying audience who expect, nay demand laughs, think the same? “So, you want me to do an open mic spot at a comedy club then?” Marc replied, “Right you are!” But that was far too easy a challenge. Surely a professional speaker, used to playing big audiences and sometimes even getting a laugh, should set his sights higher… or at least further North.
“I bet you £1 that you can’t put on a successful show at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.” The bet was on: Marc Hogan had less than 12 months to perform a 1 hour comedy show for 21 nights at the world’s largest comedy festival. And so it began; the open spots, the sleepless nights, the laughs, the silences, the boos, the booze, and the endless, endless writing, rewriting, rephrasing and finding different words for what became the biggest challenge of Marc’s life.
Inspirational Communication / Personal Impact
We all know that we communicate with our body, voice and words but what about our attitude? Your attitude to presentations, meetings, customer service, networking, negotiations or even other people, affects your body, voice and words and more importantly, how the person you are communicating with perceives you! The first step to Inspirational Communication is to understand and if necessary challenge those attitudes. The second step is to learn the communication skills that inspire others.
In this dynamic and interactive course, Marc Hogan utilises cutting edge psychological techniques complemented by good old fashioned common sense, to leave audiences excited and energised; ready to put their improved communication skills to use back in the work place. The Inspirational Communication programme is tailored to fit the audience’s specific outcomes, from presenting to negotiation to networking. It can take the form of a 60 minute keynote speech or a more detailed one day training event.
Audience Profile: Depending on your specific needs Inspirational Communication can be tailored to run for management teams to sales and marketing departments to accounts and admin. Suitable for audiences of 20 people and upwards.
S.A.L.E.S.
Whether you are conscious of it or not, we all sell every day. Some of us are paid to sell a product or service, others need to present our ideas to the Board, ask for a pay rise, or even try to convince our kids to eat their greens. No one likes to be “sold to” and God forbid that somebody tries to “close” us. So, what if, rather than your customer being “sold to” you could solve their problems for a fair and reasonable fee?
Marc’s 5 step S.A.L.E.S. system will not only inspire your team, improve their communication skills and increase their sales. It will also ensure that they and their customers enjoy the process a whole lot more!
- Solve people’s problems
- Align values
- Language that builds trust
- Elicit and understand their needs
- Solutions that benefit both parties
Depending upon audience size and organisation needs, the S.A.L.E.S. system can be delivered as either an inspiring 90 minute keynote speech or for those looking for more in depth knowledge it can be learnt over a one or two day training event.
Audience Profile: S.A.L.E.S. is specifically designed for sales managers, face to face sales execs and customer service departments. It can also be tailored to telesales execs. For audiences of 20 people and upwards.

Outstanding speaker, really engaged with the whole audience. Marc has a natural ability to make people feel at ease and interact. His S.A.L.E.S input, with a comical slant really comes across well. Marc’s talk would benefit everyone from all areas of business and I would highly recommend.
Tony Flanagan – ASR Computers Ltd –
Marc was definitely the best guest speaker we have ever had presenting at our User Group meeting, which is quite a feat considering we have had guest speakers who have climbed Everest and sailed around the world! – I can’t praise him enough.
John Penny – GM, Reebok Sports Club –
Very funny, interesting, useful, and most importantly different.
Sandy Jarrett – Select Group –
Marc’s presentation at our breakfast seminar was immensely enjoyable. His engaging and inspirational presentation style had the whole audience spellbound. Through his humorous and interactive approach, he motivated every single audience member and gave them skills to take away and practice.
Lee Farnsworth – EAME, Allergan Ltd –
I wanted a speaker to wrap up our conference who could inspire our sales teams. I didn’t want a sportsman a mountaineer or an astronaut. That might be uplifting, but does it truly inspire and drive change? Most of us don’t run, row or climb. Marc started where many of us started and then he got brave. Really, really brave. He was funny, challenging and wise. More than that, Marc inspired change; many made promises, several committed to a change in attitude and at least one made a major life change. I would recommend him without hesitation.
Liz Kynoch – TESCO plc –
Marc challenged, provoked and entertained our International Technical Team, no mean feat since the 20 high ranking delegates were from all over Europe and Asia. We all left the training with a new perspective and we have all put the skills to good use since the event!
Gwyn Griffiths – Deloitte –
The feedback we have had from participants has been extremely positive and some of your techniques could be witnessed in action during the day and later in the evening. We have all come away from the day feeling energised, motivated and more connected as a group. We really value the input you had into making this day a success.
Richard Brown – BAA (Heathrow Express) –
Marc was our guest speaker at our parties to celebrate becoming the National Customer Service Team of The Year. It was really going to take something special to engage this team. Marc was able to provide a fresh spark of inspiration and provoke people to think beyond their favoured ways of thinking. Engaging, energetic and inspirational – great stuff!
Rob Golledge, Amadeus UK & Ireland –
We were looking for a guest speaker with an interesting story to tell for an international WEMEA conference attended by senior executives. What appealed to me about Marc was his understanding of the commercial world combined with his fascinating and amusing anecdotes about personal transformation. Marc has an engaging presentation style and he adeptly applied experiences from his own journey through life to our conference theme. We wanted a guest speaker who would prove a highlight of the conference programme and I’m pleased to say that Marc Hogan delivered exactly what we needed.
