Marseille to Sheffield

Chris Waddle played for top football teams including: Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspurs, Olympique de Marseille, Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland, Burnley and Torquay. It was his big money move to French club Marseille, where he saw most success; winning the French Championship three times and finalists in the European Cup (1990-91).

On his return to Britain, he signed for Sheffield Wednesday. Enjoying an Indian summer, putting in some super performances and taking the side to two domestic cup finals in 92-93; sadly losing to Arsenal in both. However that season he was awarded the 1993 Football Writers Footballer of the Year, for his consistent excellent performances at Wednesday.

Singing Sport

In his long career, Waddle scored a total of 147 goals; but equally memorably, also sang besides his 1990 England team mates, on the New Order penned hit ‘World in Motion’. He even sang on Top of the Pops with his Tottenham playing mate Glen Hoddle; with charting success ‘Diamond Lights’.

Sadly for Chris, he is probably most synonymous with a heart breaking penalty miss; against West Germany in the semi final of the 1990 FIFA World Cup. Just minutes after cracking the ball against the post, in normal time; when the scores were locked at 1-1.
