Alan Titchmarsh: Assistant Editor

Alan was first employed as an Assistant Editor of gardening books, by Hamlyn. Before moving to Amateur Gardening Magazine in 1976. Taking up the Deputy Editor’s post, before going on to be freelance in 1979. The TV gardener has proved his green fingers are also skilled at writing. Having published more than 50 gardening books, and writing gardening articles for BBC Gardeners’ World and Radio Times. Along with the Daily Express and Sunday Express.

TV Shows

Famed for his TV presenting; Alan Titchmarsh was first seen on our screens in the BBC TV show ‘Nationwide’, as a horticulture expert. This interest in TV, led to him being invited to present the Chelsea Flower Show, on BBC TV in 1983. A show that Alan has now hosted every year since.

He has been on other BBC shows, such as ‘Breakfast Time’ and ‘Open Air’. Also ITV shows ‘Love Your Garden’ and ‘Masterpiece’. In these roles he has been seen as presenter or a gardening expert; giving commentary and answering questions. In 1996, Alan took over as host of the long running BBC TV program ‘Gardeners’ World’. With the show being filmed in his own garden.

Ground Force

In 1997 he brought gardening to the masses, with the BBC 1 TV series ‘Ground Force’. In which he and fellow presenters Charlie Dimmock and Tommy Walsh, perform makeovers on gardens. The show travelled as far as USA and South Africa. The latter where a memorable episode saw the Ground Force team revive Nelson Mandela’s own garden.

Other Media Work

Globally known as a green fingered guru, Alan’s success and gardening knowledge has cemented him as a British gardening authority. Away from the gardening world, Alan has had spells presenting ‘Songs of Praise’; and a series of shows on BBC Radio 2, where he played light classical music.

Alan Titchmarsh has been appointed with an MBE; and awarded the title of Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Hampshire in 2001. He is also an ambassador for over 50 charities, and immortalised in Madame Tussaud’s wax museum. Alan is truly a gardening authority, he is the perfect host for awards ceremonies and events.
