Sandi Toksvig the diminutive Dane has been wowing audiences with her caustic wit since her student days; when she appeared in Cambridge Footlights reviews. Sandi’s father, Claus Toksvig, was a foreign correspondent for Danish television; and was sent on assignments to several countries around the world. So Sandi was brought up in Europe, Africa, and the United States.
Sandi Toksvig: Comedian
She spent six years at Mamaroneck High School in New York State, went to a boarding school in Guildford, Britain; then studied Law, Archaeology and Anthropology at Girton College Cambridge University, graduating with a first class degree. Sandi Toksvig also studied Muslim law as part of her extra studies. She had hoped to become a human rights lawyer and won the Theresa Montefiore Memorial Award for outstanding academic achievement; and the Raemakers Prize for Archaeology. While at Cambridge she wrote and starred in the first all-woman show for the Footlights review.
Lighting Technician For Jesus
Sandi Toksvig took a year off her studies to work as a lighting technician; on ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ at the Palace Theatre, London. Sandi then went to work on various productions for Nottingham Playhouse; including ‘A Little Night Music’ and then went on to work with the New Shakespeare Company in Regents Park, London. She made a break into children’s television in the 80’s, appearing in the popular Saturday morning show ‘No. 73’ for which she was also a writer. As a former member of ‘The Comedy Store Players’, she moved into the comedy circuit, radio, and mainstream television. Sandi first performed on Channel 4’s improvisation show ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway’?
Sandi Toksvig On The Beeb
She became a panellist on the BBC Radio 4 spoof game show ‘I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue; and the BBC 2 Television word game ‘Call My Bluff’. She co-presented Island Race with John McCarthy. Sandi now divides her time between travelling, writing and performing, She presents Radio 4’s Excess Baggage and The News Quiz; and is still a regular on I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue. Other TV credits include; Mock the Week, QI and the first ever episode of Have I Got News For You.
Children’s Author
Sandi Toksvig has written a number of children’s books, starting with Tales From The Norse’s Mouth. She has also been successful with non-fiction, including Island Race; an account of her voyage around the coast of Great Britain with her friend and former Beirut hostage John McCarthy.
Award Winning Sandi Toksvig
Sandi has been named Channel 4 Political Humourist of the Year; and Radio Broadcaster of the Year by the Press Guild. Away from presenting and performing, Sandi is an accomplished author writing books for both adults and children.
