As the phrase “They Think it’s all over” passes into the vocabulary books, Sir Geoff Hurst, MBE, is the man who made sure it really was all over for Germany.
He scored the third goal of his hat-trick in the dying moments of the 1966 World Cup as the crowd streamed onto the pitch sealing the victory over Germany. Sir Geoff has been asked to talk about those precious moments in his life ever since and has collected lots of stories from members of the public where they were at the time.
He originally started his career as a Wing-Half with West Ham, moving into a more forward role and scoring in the 1964 Cup Final against Preston. In all he made 411 league appearances, 88 cup appearances and in total scored 248 goals. Geoff was awarded an MBE in 1977 and in November 1998 was knighted for 30 years of service and contribution to football. The son of a footballing father, who played for Oldham, Geoff was also an accomplished cricketer playing briefly for Essex in the first class game.
He left West Ham for Stoke and then West Bromwich Albion before continuing his career in football management. His managerial career took him to Telford F.C from 1976 – 1979 and Chelsea from 1979 – 1981. He then coached in Kuwait from 1982 – 1984. Sir Geoff went on to make his mark in marketing and sales fields. After football Geoff worked in business as a successful insurance salesperson and became Sales Director and Managing Director of Motor Plan and the Brown and White department of a London Insurance Company. His wealth of business experience enables him to be an excellent choice for business events.
Sir Geoff offers after dinner speaking packed with wit and precious anecdotes from his time as a player. Or can deliver motivational speaking drawing on his knowledge of competition both in sport and business.
