Mike Brearley had a successful cricketing career and is regarded as one of England’s best ever captains. His ability to understand people and fellow team mates bought the best out of his colleagues. He played for Middlesex County cricket Club and became their captain. Between 1976 and 1982 Middlesex won four County Championship titles and two Gillette Cup or NatWest Cups and of the 31 tests in which Mike captained England, 18 were victories and only 4 were lost. As a batsman he scored over 25,000 first class runs at an average of 38.

His ability to motivate players like Ian Botham whose greatest performances were arguably under Brearley’s leadership have earned him a reputation as a great leader. In 1985 Mike Brearley published “The Art of Captaincy” a book that attempted to deal with leadership beyond, as well as on, the cricket field. It has subsequently been republished and is read by budding leaders in industry as well as thoughtful cricketers.

He also worked as a nursing assistant in a clinic for disturbed adolescents, as a psychotherapist for an inner London Unit and as a school counsellor. Mike is now a full-time psychoanalyst in North London.

Mike is an experienced motivational speaker and describes his style as serious, lively and thought provoking and regularly speaks at blue-chip corporate events.

Mike’s hobbies include walking, playing fives, classical music, the theatre and literature.
