Greg Davies is a British comedian whose stand-up comedy career has progressed from supporting roles in television sitcoms to roles as lead actor in his own series – Man Down
The Inbetweeners’ Mr Gilbert (and former teacher) is now a fixture on everything from Mock The Week to Would I Lie To You? After returning to classroom duties in his sit-com Man Down, he also dishes out infuriating tasks to fellow comedians as Dave’s Taskmaster. In cabaret Greg lists the pros and cons of being exceedingly tall, especially in Thailand.
A qualified teacher, much of Davies’ work as a comedian and the content of his stand-up comedy shows have been inspired by his work in the classroom; many of his first roles as an actor were as teachers and the central premise of his own series revolves around the lives of frustrated British teachers.
Comedian, actor and writer Greg has played William Shakespeare (on CBBC) and WG Grace (for Channel 4’s cricket coverage), but is probably best known as the imbalanced head of sixth form Mr Gilbert in the BAFTA winning school sit-com The Inbetweeners.
Greg’s Inbetweeners role is apt, as he spent thirteen years as a teacher before taking to comedy. The career switch worked, and he first found success with the acclaimed sketch group We Are Klang. The trio were nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Award and went on to their own series on BBC3.
As a solo performer Greg’s routines cover everything from his family, his career as a teacher, his TV fame, his 6’8” stature, life, relationships, family and people, with a combination of intelligence, wordplay and glorious, infectious silliness. He was also nominated again for the Edinburgh Award (for his solo show), making him one of only a handful of performers to be nominated twice.
Post-Inbetweeners, Greg returned to the fictional classroom in his own Channel 4 sit-com Man Down, about the travails of a luckless drama teacher still living with his parents. Greg has also starred in the trans-Atlantic sitcom Cuckoo, hosted Dave’s hit show Taskmaster, and has appeared on Mock the Week, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, and Never Mind The Buzzcocks.
