Knee Injury

Until a knee injury ended his sporting career, Alan Hansen was one of the most successful football players of his generation. He captained Liverpool to a historic double win, and he is one of few players to have won all the honours available at club level, at least twice.

In his after dinner speeches the former Liverpool captain, golf fanatic and occasional newspaper columnist; looks at how the game has changed and reveals some of what happens away from home.

Alan Hansen TV Stardom

After his playing career Alan forged a new role on TV, and became a firm favourite on ‘Match of the Day’. His insights into the strengths and weaknesses (particularly weaknesses) of teams and individual players; won him a reputation as one of TV’s best football pundits.

Alan also fronted several documentaries on the game, using his access to players like David Beckham and Michael Owen. He explored the implications of rising salaries for top flight players, and the system of bringing youngsters through the ranks of pro football.

As well as working on his handicap (he plays off three), Alan has made various media appearances; from chat shows to TV ads, and has written a column for the Daily Telegraph.

Liverpool Footballer

Cool on the ball, calm under pressure and an integral part of the meanest defence in Liverpool football history; Alan Hansen in a red shirt was class personified. Rated by many as the club’s finest ever centre half, the elegant Scot boasts one of the most impressive medal collections in football.

Hansen helped bring eight league titles and three European Cups to Anfield, during his 13 years on Merseyside. Oh, and in 1986 he captained the Reds to their first ever double.

Derby Debut

Signed from Partick Thistle for £100,000 (on the nod of legendary Celtic boss Jock Stein), Alan Hansen arrived on the scene as a shy, skinny kid. He made his debut in a 1-0 home win over Derby County, in September 1977 and played in the following year’s European Cup final triumph, over FC Bruges at Wembley.

It was not until the magnificent 78-79 season however, that ‘Jocky’ finally ousted Emlyn Hughes from the team; and made one of the two centre half berths his own. This was the year in which Liverpool conceded a miserly 16 league goals.

Number Six

Relying on brain rather than brawn, very few centre forwards ruffled Hansen. A crisp tackler, his reading of the game was exceptional; and he is widely regarded as one of the most skilful centre halves, in British football history.

The number six oozed elegance and his graceful style was tailor made for Liverpool’s penchant, for patiently building from the back – a tactic that brought huge success at home and abroad.

Alan Hansen Speaker

His after dinner speech looks at how the game has changed. He reveals the difference in prep, between English football’s most successful managers, and what really happens when playing away from home.
